Malcolm, nearly always called Mal, is the fourth child and second son of House Sylea. From the moment he was born, he was well provided for and always got what he wanted. Compared to his much louder and more boisterious siblings, however, he didn't ask for much, nor did his parents pay as much attention to him -- but then, he never sought for that either. As he grew older, it became more obvious that Mal avoided the limelight as much as most of his siblings fought for it and that compared to his siblings, he was different. As the second in line to the seat of Sylea, he was given an education similar to his older brother. Unlike Jarek, Mal struggled through his studies but unlike the rest of his siblings, he truly wanted to learn and didn't resort to other measures to get himself through his lessons. Despite that, he could not make heads or tails of politics, there was too much history and geography to read over and understand, and anything but the most simple of mathematics felt beyond him. What he was good at, though, was fencing. The stances and movements felt as fluid and natural as his academic studies did not, and to this day, his skill with a sword is one of few things he feels a little bit of pride towards. Even in the blood feud against House Keir, Mal is the exception.The fact that he can't bring himself to hate House Keir as his family does and there is a very large part of him that can't hate them disturbs him almost as much as most of his family's irrational hatred and derision towards them. The only person who has a reasonable view on the matter, he felt, had always been Jarek. He took a secret comfort in Jarek's seemingly neutral stance towards House Keir, relieved that maybe it wasn't so unnatural to not hate House Keir as the rest of his siblings did. Like everyone else, Mal was decieved. During the autumn, Mal fell asleep in a little alcove in the library he used as a refuge from his siblings' loud verbal spats while attempting to memorise some historical facts. He was roused by whispering, and glancing to see who it was, found his father in deep discussion with someone out of his sight. Eavesdropping further, he discovered that his father was talking to Jarek, and that they were plotting the downfall of House Keir, their hated rival. Mal could not believe what he was hearing: Jarek -- the one he thought, out of all his siblings, cared the least about the feud with Keir -- was whispering words of utmost loathing, words of deeply rooted hate towards a house their family had held a vendetta against for centuries. When the news of the deaths of House Keir's male heirs reached Sylea, the reaction was as Mal had expected. His sisters gloated, Keane laughed as he did when beat Mal at his petty games, Jarek holed himself in the library. Mal murmured a few words about how Keir had it coming to them and hoped that it didn't sound as unenthusiastic as he felt. Out of loyalty or fear, Mal has never breathed a word of what he had heard that day to anyone. Of all his siblings, Mal takes the most after his quiet and meek mother. He is shy, nervous, eager to please and easily intimidated by his family. He does not have an obnoxious bone in his body, and is the most friendly, personable and approachable of his siblings. While his siblings battle for attention and supremacy over the other, he shies away from their arguments and screaming matches -- or rather, hides from them -- in favour of some quiet. When he gets caught out or drawn into these stoushes, he resembles a deer caught in headlights, hopelessly half-agreeing with whatever argument each side puts forth in the feverent wish that everyone will be happy and let him go. After years of listening to his siblings gloat and boast about their skills and superiority and his struggles in being more than good at anything besides fencing, he completely believes the doctrine that any praise and attention he gets is undeserved and unwarranted because his siblings are better. His relationship with his siblings vary in closeness, but not in their degree of dysfunctionality. His sisters are equally likely to croon about how nice and sweet he is (not like that brat Keane) when they need something from him as they to tear his confidence apart by reminding him how much better they are than he is when he shows some sign of standing up to them. With Keane, he faces merciless bullying about his looks, teasing about his people pleasing nature and trivial competitions he never wins due to Keane's constant rule-bending. One would never know looking at the both of them that Keane is the younger brother. Previously he had found Jarek the easiest to get along with, though he felt constantly under scrutiny when in his presence. Now he avoids Jarek whenever possible in the desperate hope that Jarek does not draw out of him that he had overheard Jarek's plans for Keir. That he has no feelings of real hatred against House Keir only serves to further heighten his inferiority complex and the feeling that there is something unnatural about him. It has been latently indoctrinated in him that to hate Keir is as natural to Sylea as breathing, and for a large part of his life questioned himself why that was. Discovering Jarek's true feelings towards House Keir has forced Mal to examine his disillusionment with the grudge. He knows he might be right in not despising Keir for the sake of a feud but a small part of him still wishes that he could manage it so he would stop feeling out of place in his own home. Despite it, or perhaps to compensate for it, he is very loyal to his family and would not do anything that would hurt their status. Mal has long red hair and large red eyes. He is short for his age, with a thin, boyish face that always seems to be smiling in some way, whether it be a pleasant, nervous, or sad one and slender frame that has gained muscle from sword practice.
